Programme Aims
Students should obtain clinical competence in history taking/examination, diagnosis, investigation and formulation of management plan and therapeutics in common neurological areas/disorders; a working knowledge of the scientific basis of common neurological disorders/areas; awareness of major recent developments in research in these areas of clinical neuroscience; experience in preparing and writing a research dissertation.

Curriculum
There are 9 modules in total.

The lecture course (September – March) comprises 8 modules, all of which are mandatory. Lectures are supported by weekly case presentation, bedside teaching, and research training sessions; a series of seminars on clinical topics, and attendance at clinical activities on site (i.e. teaching rounds, clinical conferences, outpatient clinics). During the latter part of the course students undertake a research project (Jan/Feb onwards), as well as a specialist attachment in a clinical firm (April onwards).

2) Epilepsy and Pain (10 credits)
3) Nerve, Muscle, Stroke (10 credits)
4) Movement Disorders (10 credits)
5) Neuropsychiatry and Cognition (10 credits)
6) Practical Neurology (30 credits)
7) Theoretical Neurology (15 credits)
8) Research Methods (15 credits)
9) Research Project (60 credits)
Students will have to obtain 180 credits to be awarded the MSc degree.
Assessment
Clinical Neurology module: one 3-hour written examination (May/June)
Epilepsy & Pain; Nerve, Muscle, Stroke; Movement Disorders; Neuropsychiatry and Cognition: one 2,000 word assignment per module.
Practical Neurology: ‘Short Case’ Clinical examinations (March)
Theoretical Neurology: Multiple Choice Questionnaire (March)
Research Methods: Peer assessment (Ongoing)
Research Project: 10,000 word dissertation and oral examination (September)
Entry Requirements
Medical qualifications (graduate medical degree), at least 2 years postgraduate experience in clinical medicine, registration with the GMC (or equivalent national authority for overseas students), and at least 6 months previous clinical experience in clinical neurology.
Number of Students Admitted: 10-15 students per annum
Closing date for applications: 31st July 2008
Studentships: A Medical Research Council studentship is awarded to one applicant selected by interview from all our taught course programmes.
